We recognize that tomorrow’s leaders need the encouragement and support of the legal community today. Therefore, we continue to undertake initiatives and participate in programs that will help us to attract the best and brightest candidates from diverse backgrounds.
In 2005, we established The Harter Secrest & Emery Diversity Scholarship. The scholarship includes a $7500 award
to be applied to the student’s law school tuition, together with a paid summer associate position. The scholarship
is awarded annually to a qualified first year student selected on the basis of his or her academic record, professional
accomplishments and other factors that evidence promise for a successful career in the legal profession, including
demonstration of a strong work ethic and the ability to work in a team environment.
DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP application
Harter Secrest & Emery is a participating firm in the Monroe County Bar Association's Rochester Legal Diversity
Clerkship Program. This program seeks to increase diversity in the legal profession in the Rochester area
by attracting qualified first-year law students to work in paid summer positions with Rochester area legal employers.
As a participating employer, we have hired several summer associates since the program's inception in 2005.
Two of our former summer associates are now full-time associates at the firm.
Our Early Interview Day was established in 2009 to provide diverse 2L and 3L law students the opportunity to interview
at the firm before our on-campus interviews begin in the fall. Students from four local law schools, Cornell Law School,
Albany Law School of Union University, University at Buffalo School of Law, and Syracuse University College of Law,
are invited to submit an application to interview with us on Early Interview Day.
